Pool Fencing & Spa Fencing Safety In Adelaide Homes
Safety in and around a swimming pool is of vital importance and one of the biggest contributors to this is a pool fence. Drowning is the biggest cause of accidental death for young children. Most accidents of this nature happen in private swimming pools. You can greatly reduce the risk of pool related incidents occurring in your swimming pool by installing fencing, with child tamper proof latches, restricting access to your pool and giving you piece of mind.
It is a legal requirement that all swimming pools or spa have a unbroken, safety barrier, installed and maintained by the pool owner restricting access by young children to the pool area.

If you are a property owner and are selling a property with a swimming pool or spa pool built before July 1993 you must make sure that the safety barrier meets today’s standards for new pools. Fencing must be constructed in such a way to make sure that:
- It is at least 1.2 metres high
- It is permanent
- The fence is an effective barrier to young children
- Young children can’t crawl under or climb over it by using foot and hand holds
- Any boundary fences used as part of the child-safety barrier are at least 1.8 meters high on the side that faces the pool, with a 900 millimetres non-climbable zone at the top inside of the fence, a boundary barrier may be climbable on the neighbour’s side.
Gates to the pool area must:
- Swing outward from the pool area
- Be self-closing from any position
- Be fitted with a latching device, out of reach of small children, at least 1.5 meters above ground level.

Here are a few of the options available:
Glass Pool Fencing
Glass has become tremendously popular, particularly with people who prefer clean modern lines – a seamless, joint free glass fence enables uninterrupted views of the pool and displays decking and other features in their best light. Good visibility also makes it easier to keep a watchful eye on younger members of the family.
Buyers also need to check local building codes to ensure their glass fence meets safety requirements.
Aluminum or Steel Tube Pool Fencing
This has been a popular style of fencing for some time – aluminium tube fencing is lightweight and once painted can resemble wrought iron. Whilst aluminium is rust-proof, it does still corrode , so regular maintenance is advisable. Tubular steel is similar in appearance to aluminium tube and wrought iron fencing and although it does rust if not properly maintained, it is stronger than aluminium.
Wrought Iron Pool Fencing
Wrought iron fencing is similar to the decorative black metal fencing that can be found in many front yards and will suit an older style more traditional looking property. It is heavy and strong, making it difficult to bend or break
Wooden Pool Fencing
If you prefer natural material, wooden or bamboo fencing is an option and can suit a pool with a tropical theme particularly well.
Mesh Pool Fencing
Made of vinyl, mesh fences are specifically designed for use around a swimming pool.
They rely on vertical posts and a tension fit and have no horizontal bars. This combined with a fine mesh with no footholds means the fence cannot be climbed. Mesh pool fences are almost completely transparent, which allows for immediate viewing of the entire pool area.
Mesh fences are available in a number of colors and sizes.
